Do I Really Need a Sick Note from My Doctor?
As a doctor, one of the most common questions I get is:
“Do I really need a sick note, or will my employer/university accept my word?”
When you don’t need a sick note
In the UK, if you’re off work for 7 days or less, you can usually “self-certify.” This means you just let your employer know without needing an official doctor’s letter.
When you do need one
You’ll need a sick note (sometimes called a fit note) if:
- You’re unwell for more than 7 days
- Your employer specifically requests it
- You need evidence for exams, school, or university
- Insurance or travel purposes require proof
How online sick notes make life easier
